Update from Grand Rapids

Good morning.  I'm Emiliana Concha de Ossa and I'd like to welcome you all to the Spectrum Health Surgical Suite. This morning we have the pleasure of operating on Steve Soper. It's a minor procedure, nothing to be concerned about but he will be under general anesthesia so, well, you never know.

Anyway, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, although since I've been dead now for 116 years any answer may be slow in coming.

Oh, and don't forget to fill out the survey at the end of the procedure, depending on outcome, of course!

Young Mother Sewing by Mary Cassatt

I've feeling right now, in this moment, that the world, our world here at any rate, has turned ever so slightly, and perhaps just for a second, back to a happy moment in time, a time of love and innocence. ut then the child appears doubtful.

The Girl in a Japanese Costume by William Merritt Chase

She was lost in thought, but looked up at me as if to ask as "what's happening around the globe and when is it going to end. . . "

The Lady of the Snows by George Henry Boughton

The thought struck her how stunningly beautiful she was. That was followed immediately by the question "What will I do now?"

Lady at her Toilette by Berthe Morisot

As she was getting ready for the day, the young woman looked into the mirror asked herself one more time, "OK, so if Lizzie Borden didn't murder her father and step-mother then WHO DID? She had the opportunity, a motive, lame to be sure, but still. . . and at least one of the murders occurred when she was most likely in the house. And she burned a dress the very next day! A puzzle indeed."

1875-1880, by Berthe Morisot (1841-1895).

Portrait of a Lady by Giovanni Boltraffio

Clarice Pusterla looked at me and said, "No more moral relativism, you've got to take sides. It's really that simple."
