Lakenenland and Marquette

Well, our Pictured Rocks Cruise was off for Tuesday.  Several thunderstorms passed through Monday night and persistent showers early Tuesday. The wind was pretty gusty with fog rolling in and out through the morning. Although they didn't cancel the cruise the cruise line did allow us to switch to Thursday when the weather is predicted to be in the late 70s and partly sunny.

Having an unexpected free day we opted to drive to Marquette, which was not in our original plan. Before we left the hotel, we checked the Moon guide to the UP and learned about a most unusual sculpture park midway between Munising and Marquette: Lakenenland. It's 35 acres of junkyard art fashion by Tom Lakenen, open every day of the year, 24 hours a day, and free! It's an incredible space, right along the North Country Trail and near the end of the half-mile walk (or you can drive) is a fire-pit with a shed nearby with firestarter and plenty of logs already cut.

Since I couldn't resist sharing photos of these wonderful sculptures with you, there are a lot -- and I mean a LOT -- of images here. Note that at the end are several photos of the Marquette Courthouse where Otto Preminger filmed "Anatomy of a Murder" with Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick and Ben Gazzara plus our outdoor dining experience of the evening. Note that several of the sculptures have a very straightforward message about some of the more uncomfortable aspects of our society so beware (pay especial attention to the Pig and the Oil vs Water sculptures)!

After our tour of the sculpture garden we drove into Marquette and walked around downtown, stopping for lunch at Donckers Lunch Counter, a throwback to days gone by: malts, phosphates, milkshakes and scrumptious sandwiches. We shared a vanilla shake -- delicious by the way -- along with soup and sandwich for Susie and a sandwich for me.

From downtown we drove west around the nearby Presque Isle State Park before making our way back along M28 to Munising.

For dinner we tried to get pasties at Muldoons just down the road from our hotel but they were closed because of, and I quote, the lack of personnel. Maybe tomorrow after we return from our Toonerville Trolley outing?

Anyway, we each got a pizza from the Cooking Carberry's, a four-woman operation in a lean-to next to a brew pub in downtown Munising. We brought the pizzas back to the hotel and ate outside our hotel overlooking the South Bay. A gorgeous evening and truly wonderful way to have dinner.
