A week after the memorial for Uncle John Ten Have at Clear Lake, Susan and I took one one final road trip for the summer. This time it was to the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo.
Located adjacent to the airport, it's less than an hour's drive from Grand Rapids and easy to find: exit Portage Rd south off I-94 to Milham Avenue; just follow the signs.
Founded by World War Two Women Air Service Pilot (WASP) Suzanne Parish and her Marine Corps pilot husband Pete there's a lot to see and appreciate: from the early days of aviation to more contemporary aircraft. But the real strength of the museum lies in its older aircraft, especially its collection of interwar as well as World War Two aircraft. There's also a wonderful permanent exhibition on the Guadalcanal Campaign. Plus there's a fair amount of hands-on stuff and lots of things to make the younger folks happy as well. And it's all indoors so weather is never going to be an issue.
Simply said: We enjoyed ourselves. The museum is informative and still fun, with a fascinating collection of 20th century aviation history. OK, so it's not the National Air and Space Museum but it's right here in west Michigan.
You can find out more right here.
There is a second, smaller building that serves as both a workshop where restorations take place as well as a warehouse for craft waiting to be restored.
